My North Carolina Arboretum Adventure!

Updated: Dec 30, 2020

My daughter and I went to the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville. This summer they are featuring a Lego Sculptures Exhibit and a Bonsai Exhibit; Lego sculptures for kids and obsolete children. They also had a Bonsai display for plant geeks and artists.

The Lego sculptures are made of thousands of blocks and displayed in appropriate settings in the Arboretum’s gardens. A spider, a hummingbird, and a wheelbarrow are only a few of the sculptures on display. This is art in the garden like nothing else.

The Bonsai Display Garden at the arboretum is showing about 50 bonsai from its collection.

Bonsai in America has become more like a miniature depiction of natural scenes. In the U.S. we have adopted the art and techniques of bonsai by applying them to North American tree species. In essence it means growing miniatures by restricting root growth and pruning top growth at the same time as keeping the plant healthy. This is truly a complicated art.
